This library was opened in the year 1911. It was actually established by collecting an amount of 2.1 million dollars donation from Samuel J. Tilden. The area of the Croton Reservoir was selected for creating a new library and its landmark was designed by the director of the New York Public Library, Dr. John Shaw Billings.

The main design of the library was designed by Carrere & Hastings Company. The library was built in the Beaux Arts style. It is a very big library which had more than one million books when it was opened and presently it has more than 10,000 current magazines.
