Statue of Liberty

Think New York and the first thing that comes to mind is the world famous Statue of Liberty. The Statue has a long history that dates back to 1886. It was a gift that was given by France to the United States in commemoration of completing 100 years of signing the United States Declaration of Independence.

The statue was originally known as the Liberty Enlightening the World and was gifted on 28th of October, 1886.

It stands tall on the Liberty Island in the New York Harbour and provides the people coming by ship with a warm welcome. The statue was sculpted by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and the internal structure was the handy work of Maurice Koechlin who was also the man behind designing the Eiffel Tower.

The pedestal is due to Richard Morris Hunt, the architect and the person who was responsible for choosing the right kind of metal (copper) was none other than Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc. The statue is under the administration of the National Park Service.
