Rockaway Beach
Rockaway Beach is an area located on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens in New York and is a must visit when you are on New York travel. It was originally made up of two villages, Hammels and Holland, named after the respective owners of the land constituting the two villages.
The beach is the biggest metropolitan beach in the US, ranging for miles on the Rockaway Peninsula, which faces the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1901, Rockway's Playland, an amusement park was built and it became an instant hit with the people as did its most popular attraction, the Atom Smasher roller coaster ride. Other attractions in this flamboyant amusement park included a million dollar midway and an Olympic sized pool, which would cater to the people for quite some years to come.
In the middle of the last century, large buildings started coming up and they are now the dominant forces of Rockaway Beach's skyline, ranging from Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the north to the Shore Front Parkway in the south.

Apart from the traditional lures of a beach like swimming, sunbathing etc, the biggest catch to this beach is that it is the only beach that includes a surfing area and is a big source of attraction when the waves are high. During calmer conditions, fishermen can try their hand at snaring a few striped bass or bluefish. Seven playgrounds ensure that youngsters have their hands full.
