Tourism Guide: Must Known Facts about New York Harbor
New York is the most populous city in United States and the center of New York metropolitan area. New York harbour has an important historical, governmental, commercial and ecological usage and usually refers to waterways of the estuary near the mouth of Hudson River.
Geographical location of New York City has favoured it by providing a huge protected harbour, river access to the interior, a temperate climate and most importantly stable bed rock. Various Algonkin people including Carnarsies and Manhattans first inhabited this site.
Till recently no one knew what was lying beneath the surface of the world's busiest harbour. In fact there is a whole other city lying which was only supplemented after discussing with sea captains, historians and divers.
The Hudson's main current has clung to lower Manhattan's edge skimming all the west side. Since then this current has been cutting a new channel out towards the center of the river. As a result mud is being scraped off the top of Lincoln Tunnel resulting in soil erosion in some spots.
Another interesting observation made was that when homicides and suicides occur during winter, the bodies often stay underwater till April. As decomposition speeds up, these bodies tend to get bloated up with gases and then bob up. Over a period of time, these bodies are driven to nooks near the seaport and Manhattan Bridge.
One more shocking fact is that the quaint wooden pilings that are found at the edge of Manhattan are highly hazardous. When a storm nocks, one of them loosens and floats and are removed by army corps. However not all floaters are removed as they are not spotted easily by the patrolling cops here.
These are some of the facts we all need to well-versed with before visiting New York Harbor.
