Great Help for Visitors: Tips on Taking New York Subways for Cheap
The New York City sub way is the most advanced rapid transit system of the world. The system is owned by the New York City but leased to Metropolitan Transport Authority. This system is also known as the MTA New York City Transit. This huge complex network is the oldest public system of the world.
The transit system is made out of 468 stations, 229 miles of routes, 656 miles of revenue track and total of 842 miles. The staggering figures shows that on weekdays there are over five million commuters taking this service. On weekends it is close to 3 million. The route systems of this transit system are quite easy to understand. They are differentiated by letters or numbers. Lines are also used to denote trains.
There are total of 24 train services in the system and three short shuttles. Each route has a color designation to represent the Manhattan trunk line. For routes outside Manhattan like the Crosstown Line a separate color is designated. Each subway is named after its Manhattan or Crosstown line. At least two subway stations are operated on a 24 hour basis. The rest is kept closed for maintenance operation.
Some color codes are as follows red-1 for Broadway Seventh Avenue, red-2 and 3 for Seventh Avenue express, green- 4 to 6 is for Lexington Avenue Express etc. The stations are well decorated with mezzanines which help the passenger to enter from all directions without crossing a busy road. There are vending machines from where the passengers can buy their tickets.
