SummerStage is an annual art performance series first established in 1986 at Rumsey Playfield of Central Park. Over two decades, it has become one of the most featured summer festivals in the park, as well in the whole New York City. To commemorate the musician John Lennon, Strawberry Fields memorial is established in the tranquil landscaped section of New York City's Central Park. It's named after the song "Strawberry Fields Forever", one of the best-known works of the Beatles and one of John Lennon's favorites.

Though born and raised in Liverpool, John Lennon had been a long time resident of New York City. As a member of the legendary Beatles band, John Lennon's voice has been the soundtrack of many peoples' childhood. During his later years in life, John Lennon lived with his wife, Yoko Ono, at The Dakota in Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. In 1982, he was murdered at the entrance of the building when he returned home with his wife from Record Plant Studio.

Grief tour to Strawberry Fields Memorial

Today the Strawberry Fields in Central Park has been the spot for fans to cherish the memory of John Lennon. This triangular garden covers a land of 2.5 acres in the park. The memorial was designed by Bruce Kelly and inaugurated on otherwise Lennon's 45th birthday. In 1984, Yoko Ono contributed $500,000 to the maintainance of the memorial.

Strawberry Fields can be entered from Central Park West at West 72nd Street, right across from the Dakota Apartments. When stepping into Strawberry Fields, you can always find the memorial covered with flowers, candles and other gifts left by Lennon fans.

Focal point of Strawberry Fields is a circular pathway mosaic made by Portuguese craftsmen, as a gift from the city of Lisbon. A single word, "Imagine", was carved in the center of the mosaic. "Imagine" is one of Lennon's famous songs. Along the path of Strawberry Fields, there is a plaque listing all the countries which have contributed to building this memorial and endorsed Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace. The bronze plaque is meant to mark John Lennon's efforts on advocating world peace.

Visitors are curious to know if there are really any strawberries in the fields. Actually, this quarter of the park seems inappropriate for panting strawberries due to a scarcity of sun. Yet a rich variety of plants can be found among the scattered bushes in Strawberry Fields.
