About the Designers

The initially designer of the bridge was German immigrant John Augustus Roebling, a cable manufacturer. Before the project of Brooklyn Bridge, he had designed several short suspension bridges like John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati and Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct in Pennsylvania. His proposal for a bridge over the East River was finally approved after six years discussion and he was appointed as the "Chief Engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge."

In July 6, 1869, John A. Roebling received a crush injury to his foot when doing surveys for the project. After that he developed a tetanus infection which finally resulted in the death. His older son, Washington Roebling, who was 32 years of age at that moment, took the charge and saw the project to the completion.

Not long after the death of his dad, in January 3, 1870, Washington also suffered an injury which caused him paralyzing. Due to his weak physical condition, Washington could not supervise the construction on site and his wife, Emily Warren Roebling came into help. This woman deserved great respect for her perseverance. Under the guidance of her husband, she studied higher mathematics, the strengths of materials, the calculations of catenary curves and the intricacies of cable construction. In the following 11 years, she had done a lot of job in helping Washington supervise the bridge's construction, and for this reason, she was awarded to be the first to cross Brooklyn Bridge on the Opening Day.

The total length of Brooklyn Bridge, including the approaches of both Manhattan and Brooklyn, is 6,016 feet, and the main span over East River is1595.5 feet. The width of the bridge is 85 feet and the elevated promenade is 15.7 feet wide. The height of this walkway above the automobile lanes is 11.5 feet. The total weight of Brooklyn Bridge, not including the caissons, towers and anchorages, is 14,680 tons. The total cost of the bridge is $15.5 million.

Brooklyn Bridge was opened at 2:00 pm on May 24, 1883 (this date coincided with the birthday of Queen Victoria, which caused the dissatisfaction of Irish workers and resulted in a protest on the Opening Day). Brooklyn is known for being the oldest suspension bridges in US. The bridge in itself holds major traditional and historical relevance. Pier 6 - Situated at the foot of Atlantic Avenue, Pier 6 adds about 7 acres of new park, including various facilities for visitors' fun and rest. The facilities compromise a destination playground (including a swing valley, a slide mountain and a water-play area), a wide promenade and a park concession (including a large restaurant, roof top deck, three sand volleyball courts and a dog run).

Main Street Lot - Have you ever dreamed of standing at the beach pebble and making your wedding vows? Main Street Lot offers such an opportunity to couples. The Cove - Located between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn shore of the East River, the Cove gives visitors true access to the water. It is also a rich habitat for fish, crabs and birds.

Please note that not all of these parts are allowed for a wedding ceremony. Currently BBP may only provide Pier 1 waterfront promenade and Main Street Lot pebble beach as wedding venues. Permits are required. 2011 season permit applications for the Empire Fulton Ferry section of the park will be accepted from June 1, 2011. If you want to confirm which part of the park is available for a wedding, call 718-222-9254.

How to get the permits? Permits must be gained in advance of undertaking regulated activities as defined in the Park Rules and Regulations. Applications must be submitted at least 21 days prior to your event. There will be a non-refundable fee of $25 for cover processing costs.

However, submitting an application does not mean you will be granted a permit. Permit rates will be assessed according to the nature of the event. Please note that permits will not be granted on holidays or holiday weekends.

What to consider when having a wedding at the BBP? There is no equipment like staging, microphones, tables and podiums permitted for weddings held at the park. You are only allowed to bring at most 5 folding chairs for elderly guests. Wedding ceremonies cannot exceed 1.5 hours, with less than 100 guests.

For weddings held at Pier 1 waterfront promenade, they have to be a standing event and cannot be in front of or use the Granite Prospect. Also, there must be a path kept on the waterfront promenade, allowing for access by the general public.

The Outdoor Season begins in April!

Come on and bond with the fellow Boot-campers! Classes at Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp take place on an ongoing basis. So you can start anytime you want. How many classes to take is depending on you too. Surely the more you take, the faster the results. Price for each class is $20. Or you can get discount packages:

Cooperated with Join Stefanie DiLibero of Gotham Wellness, Ariane Hundt will start the Ultimate Wellness Bootcamp on April 24, 2011. It will last for 7 days.
