Combining many advance methods in suspension bridge technology, the George Washington Bridge was built in just 4 years and was opened to the public in 1931, October.
The bridge deck comprises of a pair of 3 foot diameter cable which in turn has been laid by using a revolutionary spinning process and flexible steel towers.
Originally the design was to cover the steelwork to the towers by concrete and panels if granite, but once the bridge authority saw that the fabricated steel skeleton had a natural beauty of its own, they decided to leave it as it is- a decision which allowed the opening of the bridge to take place almost 8 months earlier besides saving money as well.

This bridge is also informally known as the GW Bridge or simply GWB and spans the Hudson River, connecting Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan New York City to Fort Lee in New Jersey. The bridge consists of an upper level. This has four lanes in each of the four directions.
The lower lane has three lanes, going for a total of 14 lanes of travel. There is a speed limit specified on the bridge which is 45 mph. The mornings and evenings are a rush hour and there is a bit of congestion then slowing down the traffic. A separate path on each side of the bridge's upper level allows pedestrians and bicycles.
