Central Park Carousel in New York

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1963, Central Park consists of a ton of attractions and sprawls about 843 acres of breathtaking landscape. The operator tapped the animal's foot on the floor and trained them to start and stop in a regular rhythm.

The next two Carousels in Central Park were steam-powered and were destroyed by fire. The current Carousel remains one of the largest merry-go-rounds in the country and features 57 hand-carved horses, including two decorative chariots as well. The Carousel has been in operation over 100 years. Until now, an average of 250,000 visitors takes a ride on the Carousel in Central Park each year. From Central Park South - If you're starting from the 59th Street and 6th Avenue, head northwest on Central Park S toward 7th Avenue. Take the first exit onto Central Park West at the roundabout. Turn right onto 65th Street Transverse Road and you'll see the Carousel in front of you.

From Central Park West - Head southeast on W 64th Street for Central Park West. Make a left turn onto Central Park West. Proceed on the West Drive and turn right onto 65th Street Transverse Road. Walk along the northern edge of the baseball fields. The Central Park Carousel is at the end of the path.

From Central Park East - When you're entering the park through the 67th Street entrance, proceed on East Drive until you can see the Dairy. Turn to the right and walk straight through the tunnel.

Extra Riding Tips

- Be prepared for long lines during busy hours, especially on warm weekends. The waiting lines can extend around the nearby vendors and further. While you wait, try to count how many horses are on the beautiful merry-go-rounds.

- Don't go to the Carousel on a rainy day. Though the Central Park Carousel is open to the public seven days a week, weather permitting. The classic family attraction might be closed on a rainy day.

- Bring your camera and capture the moments while riding the Carousel. The great artwork and hand-carved horses are set in the gorgeous Central Park scenery, making the Carousel one of the most beautiful scenes in the park.
