The credit for building the bridge goes to John Roebling, his son Washington Roebling, and Washington's wife, Emily Warren Roebling. Although many books forget to give credit to Emily Roebling, she was the one who for 11 years was the sole link between her husband (who fell ill) and the engineers on site.

It was festive time when the bridge opened and the President Chester Arthur along with Franklin Edson the Mayor of New York crossed the bridge to mark its opening and was greeted by Seth Low, the Mayor of Brooklyn when they reached the Brooklyn end.

Initially it was known as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge but in 1915 it was formally named the Brooklyn Bridge. In 1964 it was listed under the National Historic Landmarks. Construction of the bridge started on 3rd January, 1870 and was completed in 1883. 24th May 1883 saw the bridge opening up for use.
