Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo is a picturesque 265 acres of land located inside the Bronx Park with the Bronx River flowing through it. It also holds the distinction of being the biggest metropolitan zoo within the country.

The story behind the creation of this zoo in the city is quite an interesting one. The land belonged to Fordhanm University and was sold to the city of New York for a meagre $1 on the condition that it should be used only for the purpose of a zoo and garden. The city kept its word by creating the magnificent New York botanical garden and the Bronx Zoo.

The zoo started operations in November 1899 with 843 animals. The zoo has grown since then and now has over 4000 animals most of which fall into the endangered category. Using the services of a New York travel guide would be a good idea to understand the history and functioning of the zoo.

A trip to the Bronx Zoo along with a New York City travel guide would be very informative both for children and adults. August 2006 saw Bronx zoo all over the news when they adopted a Snow Leopard cub found in Pakistan for a breeding program.

Since Pakistan was unable to do anything for the cub the Bronx Zoo's services were sought. 2008 saw a Madagascar exhibit being opened up at the zoo by the Wildlife Conservation Society. Wildlife from that part of the world includes Nile crocodiles, hissing crocodiles and lemurs.

If it's in winter that you are planning your trip then you would find many cold weather animals like the polar bears and the snow leopards. Plan your trip well in advance and see how the animals in the Bronx zoo are put into creations that are similar to their very own eco-system.
